There have been many deaths attributed to having no or limited mobile service in the Ku Ring Gai Chase National Park area. But with 3.32million visits to the park a year, visitor safety is a significant concern which needs to be redressed by both State and Federal Governments. Click here for more information.
Marine Rescue uses Cottage Point as a major support base base for the area, providing support and safety for marine vessels in this area, Pittwater and out to sea. Part of their rescue plan is to be able to use mobile phones as a means of communication. UHF and VHF radios have limitations because of the hilly terrain in the area and they also drop out in certain weather conditions and Marine Rescue then have to reply on mobile phone communication. But if there is no reception then they are not able to assist and are putting their lives at risk and that of the people they are trying to help. Mobile phones provides a greater level of safety and stability compared to other communication platforms, when there is service available because everyone has a mobile phone.
The Rural Fire Service rely on mobile phones and radio in an emergency. Not being able to communicate by mobile as shown in the Ash Tuesday disaster and not being able to use mobile phones puts lives at risk.
Because of the hilly terrain at Cottage Point the tourist plane services that operate here are not able to use their radio below a certain height. As a backup they carry a mobile phone.
It is a requirement of the Federal Government that in an emergency you can phone 000 for assistance.
Any carrier will take your call, drop off other users and increase power to your handset to ensure stability of the call to provide assistance.
On the 31st May 2019 this 000 service failed and a death resulted.
Since launching this website site in 2017 there has been numerous deaths that may have been prevented if mobile phone coverage was available. There has been a plane crash, car and bike accidents, push bike accidents and boating incidents where people need to be able to communicate in this area.
Now is the time to have this changed. Please sign our local member's petition to protect the visitors to Ku Ring Gai Chase National Park and Cottage Point.
